A Good Choice
This was my first wah pedal which I purchased with some birthday money. It is NOT a true bypass for those who are curious.
When I first plugged into the Vox V847 I noticed the sweep was sharp and quick. There is a spot just past the middle towards the toe where there is a very sudden sharp sweep almost like flicking a switch when the sound changes quickly. While not bad it just doesn't suit my taste for most music except for funk. I love using this wah pedal for Voodoo Chile type sweep rhythms.
Also something else I noticed is that in the heel-down position things are very muddy indistinguishable and almost empty of any tone. When used right this can sound pretty cool but I just can't stay in that position if I want anything I'm playing to be heard by others.
This pedal is great for Rock solos. With some distortion or overdrive the sharp sweep sound great to emphasize bends and notes especially when rocking back and forth to a set of quick notes or a finger tapping section emphasizing certain notes it sounds great. With distortion though it is harder to get a smooth sounding transition from heel to toe. In fact it is even harder.
I recently got a Dunlop 535Q Crybaby and will be modding my old Vox Wah to either sell or add to my studio equipment depending on the new sounds I can get out of it. If you are interested in electronics there are numerous mods out there for this pedal. You can make it true bypass change the sweep range high end low end and low end clarity.
Overall I found this pedal very handy and fun to have when playing as it really adds another element to your sound and is always a crowd pleaser. While I listed many faults to this thing it really works great for the price. I would choose this pedal over the similarly priced crybabies any day. As for recording and gigging the lack of true bypass isn't that noticable and the odd sweep range is fine if your know how to use it. It really kicks out some cool sounds and it ain't that pricey either. Give it a go if you're looking for an affordable Wah Pedal!More detail ...
